Analog Sympathiser

A deeply personal return exploring 30 years of analog synthesis, vintage gear restoration, and creative exploration.

I was seventeen when I walked into a second-hand music store and found it—the Roland JX-3P with its PG-200 programmer. I twisted the knobs without any real expectation, and something clicked. Not just the sound, but the understanding. Suddenly, I could hear the synthesis techniques that had lived in the records I'd grown up on. They weren't mysterious anymore. They were discoverable. Playable. Mine.

That moment shaped the next thirty years. Analog gear became the foundation of my sound, not because it was trendy or because I was chasing nostalgia, but because of what it does—the sonic character it imparts, the way it responds to your hands, the dialogue between intention and accident.

When the wave came this time, I knew exactly what I wanted to do. I took those vintage synths—including that Roland from when I was seventeen—and had them restored to their original state. Not as museum pieces, but as working instruments again. Alongside my Eurorack system, these restored synths gave me something I desperately needed: familiarity.

That mastery—that intimate knowledge of an instrument—doesn't limit creativity. It frees it. Because when your hands know where to go, your ear can focus on what matters: the actual sound, the feeling, the intention behind it.
